Where Should I Interview My Guests?

First of all, I have to say I am ridiculously excited to start a new video podcast channel. I had such an awesome time interviewing such amazing thought leaders when I hosted Un-Missed Connections. It was a very tough choice to leave the channel behind when I stepped into the next chapter of my professional career.

With the grinding halt that COVID has put onto our daily lives, I found myself with an unstoppable desire to create more business thought-leadership content. Now as we are four months after the birth of our second son, I found no better time to start this project than right now. With the help of my wife we’ve come up with the new name “Business Over Brews.” I absolutely love it! I’m in the process now of connecting with thought-leaders to become guests on the show. At this time all interviews will be remote using Skype similarly to my interviews on Un-Missed Connections.

My question to you is, which background do you feel is better for the interviews?

The Basement

Picture of interview screen from basement
The Basement – Canon EF 24-70mm f 2.8 L Lens

Pros:

  • Better lighting (I feel the skin tones have less shine and harshness)
  • Easier Equipment Setup
  • Larger Room
  • Increased Depth of Field (For cinematic influence)
  • Better Audio Capture (Less echo)
  • More Filming Options (Larger space for configuration)
  • Better Camera Lens Options
  • Support up to 3 Physical Guests (When pandemic is over)
  • More Cats

Cons:

  • Busy Background
  • Casual Background
  • More Cleaning and Tiding Prep (Shared space with kids and wife)

The Office

The Office – Tamron 10-24mm f 3.5-4.5 Lens

Pros:

  • More Professional Background
  • Less Distracting Background
  • Limited Kid Access
  • Windowed Door for Easier Intrurruption Assessment
  • Less Space Clean and Prep

Cons:

  • Complex Setup (Camera and Lighting Obstruct General Office Use)
  • More Lights Required (Can’t fit a softbox)
  • Smaller Room Limits Filming Options
  • Lower Depth of Field (Less cinematic influence)
  • Prone to Interruptions
  • Curtains Need To Go
  • Limited Camera Lens Options
  • Unable to Host 2 Physical Guests (When pandemic is over)
  • Fewer Cats

Personally I’m leaning more towards the basement studio than the office because of the better lighting and lens options I can choose but I figured this would be a great way to see what others who may be interested in watching the content would rather see. Let me know which one you like better in the comments below!

  1. I vote that you open a shed studio in the backyard so we don’t have to share. Lol
